About Us

From our delicious hand-picked and roasted Macadamia nuts, to our perfectly roasted coffees, Ahualoa Farms has something for everyone.

OUR STORY

Ahualoa, Hawaiian for “Long Cloud,” paints a perfect picture of the weather pattern that forms over our town where the majestic Mauna Kea Volcano meets the ruggedly beautiful Hamakua Coast.

Nestled in quaint Honoka’a Town on the Big Island of Hawaii, Ahualoa Family Farms is a small operation with big ambitions. Our family owned and operated farm started from a dream and a few backyard coffee and macadamia nut trees. A dream to get out of the hustle and bustle of California and enjoy the truly important things in life. With a passion for farming and a love for family, Ahualoa Family Farms was the perfect fit for our ohana’s new adventure.

Since taking over the business in 2017, we’ve put our 20 years of farming experience to work by massively expanding the farming operation. We have the honor of caring for and reviving over 200 acres of macadamia nut orchards that had been abandoned for about a decade. These are some of the oldest macadamia nut trees on the Big Island, tucked away on the historic Hamakua Coast, not far from where the very first macadamia nut tree in Hawaii was planted in the 1880s!

Although macadamia nuts are what we are known for, our tiny coffee planting is quickly gaining a following! With our mild climate, high rainfall, and deep volcanic soils, our 100% Hamakua coffee is one happy camper and shines in every cup. We cannot keep our beans on the shelf and are always planting coffee keiki to keep our loyal followers caffeinated and satisfied!

Our other enormous undertaking has been restoring Hawaii’s oldest macadamia nut factory. Located in Haina Camp below Honoka’a Town, this macadamia nut factory is the reason why Honoka’a used to be known as “The Macadamia Nut Capital of the World.” In addition to what we harvest ourselves, we also buy macadamia nuts from local growers, big and small. Their continuous support and relationships we’ve forged have really brought us all together as a community. We love this town and are honored to bring back this rich agricultural heritage and continue the legacy by turning Hawaii’s oldest mac nut factory into Hawaii’s newest mac nut factory!

From our locally grown Macadamia nuts, to our perfectly roasted coffees, what we grow, produce and sell is “No Ka Oi” –tha best!

Live with aloha, respect the aina, one ohana

Honoka’a Town

We are proud and honored to call historic Honoka’a Town home. This quaint little town is located on the Hamakua Coast and was built around the sugar cane plantations in the late 19th and early 20th century. Plantation style buildings, mom and pop shops, and local smiles still line Mamane Street, the heart of Honoka’a Town. In Hawaiian, Honoka’a means “rolling bay”, referencing the sound the nearby ocean makes when its waves “roll” the stones along the rugged Hamakua shoreline. Visit Honoka’a Town and you are sure to fall in love and instantly feel the relaxed aloha spirit while stepping back in time to true Hawaii.

Hawaii’s Oldest & Newest Macadamia Nut Factory

In 2018 we acquired this magnificent piece of Hawaii’s rich agricultural history. Not only is it beautiful, but has many stories to tell. Known as “Hawaii’s oldest mac nut factory”, it was shut down in the 90’s and seen years of neglect. With lots of blood, sweat, and tears, we have been restoring this gem and installing new macadamia nut processing equipment; Creating Hawaii’s oldest and newest mac nut factory!

Kapulena Macadamia Nut Orchards

Located halfway between Honoka’a Town and the iconic Waipio Valley, Kapulena is one of the oldest macadamia nut orchard communities in Hawaii. It was initially planted as one giant orchard, spanning nearly 500 acres and was the primary supplier of macadamia nuts to “Hawaii’s oldest Mac Nut Factory”. We have been bringing many of these forgotten orchards back to life and working together with other farmers in this community. The very first macadamia nut trees introduced to Hawaii from Australia were planted in nearby Kukuihaele nearly 150 years ago and still producing to this day. Kapulena’s moderate climate and abundant rainfall allow macadamias to thrive in this region and we are honored to be a part of this deep macadamia nut heritage.

Pā’auhau Coffee Farm

Pa’auhau, meaning “Land of Sunshine”, undoubtedly lives up to its name. This gentle sloping region was heavily farmed during the sugar cane era, and now mostly home to pasture…and our coffee! The mild climate, ample rainfall, and deep, rich, volcanic soil provides a perfect environment for growing our 100% Hamakua Coffee. Pa’auhau’s natural bounties are evident in the lush, green, picturesque coffee trees on our farm as it delivers an ideal balance of the elements necessary for growing the most delicious cup of coffee!
